Faces of the Dominican Republic

Medium Format Film & Digital. Taken between Las Terrenas and Nagua, 2015.

The people of the Dominican Republic are some of the most receiving and joyful I have had the pleasure experiencing. Starting in Samana and travelling north through Vila Riva, Nagua, Castillo, Pimentel and Cabrera, this series focuses on rural lifestyle of small scale farmers and small merchants within these small towns.

Though rural communities depend on the farming industry, the government has not done much to address the low agricultural productivity. Natural adversities such as tropical storms, mudslides and hurricanes are a recurring threat to rural zones and the living conditions and incomes of the rural population. The rural poverty rate is about three times as high as the urban poverty rate.
